The Alan Turing Institute in the United Kingdom (UK) has received a $5 million investment from Microsoft. Microsoft, which has headquarters in Redmond, Washington, United States, is traditionally recognised as a software provider, but has successfully transitioned to one of the industry’s key cloud players. The company’s flagship cloud products are its Office 365 communication and collaboration suite, and Azure, a computing and storage platform offering that competes with the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google. Microsoft is giving the Alan Turing Institute support with its analytics and machine learning activity.

Owned by the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL, Warwick, and the EPSRC, The Alan Turing Institute is headquartered at the British Library in London. The institute specialises in research and is named after the World War 2 code breaker Alan Turing who is featured in the 2014 Hollywood movie ‘The Imitation Game’. The aim of the institute is to position the UK as a leader in data science. Microsoft’s support will include cloud computing capacity which will enable the institute’s researchers to engage in large-scale data analytics.

“The Turing is a unique place where researchers from the world’s top universities come together to push the boundaries of data science,” explained Jeannette Wing, Microsoft Research’s Corporate Vice-President in a statement on the company’s blog. “This partnership with the Alan Turing Institute is a prime example of how Microsoft is investing in the global data science research ecosystem, and we look forward to seeing the results of this collaboration.” She added, “This partnership with the Alan Turing Institute is a prime example of how Microsoft is investing in the global data science research ecosystem, and we look forward to seeing the results of this collaboration.”
